In 2011, Urban American Management made a pledge to only buy compact fluorescent light bulbs for their residential units. Based on the number of units owned by Urban American Management, the decision reduces the amount of damaging carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by millions of pounds. Dedicated to improving neighborhoods, the company is a member of the NYC Energy Efficiency Council.
At one time, the Council worked with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Lighting Research Center to create an Energy Smart program. The Lighting Research Center focuses on learning about lighting technologies and energy use, and they reported that compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) have a longer lifespan than incandescent bulbs and are capable of creating an ambient atmosphere or task-focused lighting.
CFLs take a few minutes to warm up and initially appear dimmer than incandescent bulbs, but they use fewer watts and provide the same amount of light. Switching from incandescent light bulbs to CFLs reduces a property’s carbon footprint and electricity bills and provides greater overall energy efficiency.
